Making sense of your family dynamics

By Christyn Greczkowski, M.A., GrDip., C.C.C. ·

Family is where we first learn how relationships work: how to ask for things, handle conflict, and share feelings, or not. Even after we leave home, those lessons come with us, often quietly shaping how we show up as adults.

Roles and unspoken rules

Many families develop roles without anyone choosing them: the responsible one, the peacemaker, the one who’s “too sensitive,” the one who’s always fine. There are often unspoken rules too, like don’t upset anyone, keep things private, or don’t talk about feelings. These can help a family function, and they can also leave us unsure who we are outside of them.

How it can show up now

You might notice difficulty setting boundaries, a pull to take care of everyone, going quiet or defensive in conflict, or feeling like a different person around family. Some people feel guilty for wanting space. Others feel stuck between closeness and independence. The ways we learned to seek closeness and safety early on tend to echo in our friendships and romantic relationships.

Understanding isn’t blaming

Looking at family patterns doesn’t mean pointing fingers. Most families are doing the best they can with what they have, and you can feel appreciation and frustration toward the same people at the same time. The goal isn’t to rewrite the past. It’s to understand how it shaped you, so you can make choices that fit who you are now.

Questions to reflect on

Working through it with support

These themes can stir up a lot, and it helps to have a space to look at them at your own pace. In counselling we move gradually. I’ll support you, and I’ll also gently challenge you when something might be worth a second look.

If you’d like support with this, I offer a free 15-minute consultation by phone or video. I see clients in person in Dollard-des-Ormeaux and online.
